Status Update – Six Months

I now have six months under my belt as a Car Sales Consultant.

Since I like to laugh and to make others laugh, I’ll share some of the more humorous moments to date. My feeling is you have to be able to laugh at yourself. Intrigued yet?

Getting Out of the Car

It must have been my first test drive that went fairly well, until we arrived back at the dealership. A very nice couple were in the front seats. Yes, they liked the car and let’s go in and talk numbers. Not so fast. I can’t believe I am going to admit this but, gotta laugh at your self right? The couple get out of the car, but I can’t. I’m in the back seat and I can’t open the doors. I’m trying anything I could think of, the driver is pushing any button to unlock the doors. At this point, I think, I can not let these people go into the dealership to say their Sales Consultant couldn’t get out of the car. I was frustrated and laughing, (to myself) at that thought. Luckily, the driver found the child safety lock!

The Test Drives

One of my fears of selling cars has always been the test drive.  Really, there are many things that could happen. Again, on one of my earlier test drives, the couple decided they loved the car, but wanted a different color. No problem, I used my cell phone to call the sales manager to see what other colors we had. WRONG! I learned a call to the dealership while on a test drive meant something went wrong, like a flat tire, ran out of gas.  I’ve never done that again.

A real fear of the test drives are crazy drivers, or at least crazy while on a test drive. Some people feel they need to test the steering by wobbling all over the road, taking turns ridiculously fast or stopping fast. These have all happened. There was only one time I involuntarily let out an audible OMG!  I deal with these memorable rides by telling myself, “It’s OK Barbara, you’re in a Volvo.”  Seriously, not a sales line, until I use it as one.

Basically, the state of the car selling business is good. Granted I can have a great month with 13 cars out the door and only 5 the next. Either that’s just the way it is in the car business or it’s me. By my next update, I will, I need to have at least 11 cars consistently.

Stay tuned for the next update. Did she make her goal?
